1960’s Living Room Refresh

I bought my house in 2020 with my husband and we’ve been working our way through projects. I’ll write a post with those projects at some point, but I’m super excited about this project. While the other ones have been either out of necessity or starting to bring our style in- we’ve been living with our college and random furniture for a while now. BUT, I’ve gotten started on getting our new furniture picked out and man is it hard to design your own space. I have eyes for ALL the expensive things, so I set myself a budget of $5,000-$7,000, in which we are replacing:

• Couch

• Chairs

• Rug

• Lights (lamps and ceiling fan)

• Fake plants (we have a cat that DESTROYS real plants)

But, luckily, my husband has already built our coffee table and TV stand, so we can save a bit on that. And I’ve already bought our curtains and curtain rods because updating a space takes time.

As much as I say that 3D renders are for general people (not in the design world all day) to see their designs come together- I use it for myself too! There’s just some things that are best hashed out in plan and renders. And sometimes I have to convince my husband he’ll like something too. So here’s the render I was working with.

Our exact TV stand and coffee table are different from these, but I wanted to have something you could shop for yourself if this tickles your fancy. That list can be found if you keep scrolling!

Our living room isn’t super large, the usable space comes out to about 13x13, but we have everything we need with this layout. We have a sectional (an absolute dream), a couple sitting chairs, storage, light, and softness/function from the curtains. We use our living room for everything and it needed to be able to function as a cozy space for our everyday, but also be able to sit a variety of people when we decide to be social enough to have people over.

Bonus note- the sectional has a sleeper pullout option that is fantastic for extra sleeping space for guests. We have one guest bedroom, but if our families come over, one is not enough, so this is a great way to fit more, but is still cute too.

My husband and I both have fairly strong opinions about our spaces and style, so it’s been interesting coming up with a mix, especially on a budget, but we’re getting there. We are both in the in between space of wanting color, but also wanting neutral, so adding color that still feels neutral with the greens and blues was an easy way to get started. We describe our style as having Midcentury, Boho, and Scandinavian touches.

Our homes are so personal and I’m excited (like ecstatic) to finally be able to start transforming ours into something that really feels like us! I hope to keep sharing updates as we make progress.
